Jon Ciobanu FICS - Marine Services, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Work History:

Jon started in the Shipping Industry in 1994 as a Trade Manager for Intersetraco Romania. In 1996 he joined Daewoo Electronics in Romania as a Logistic Manager where he had to strictly coordinate the logistic support provided to sales department with the sailing schedules of the goods by sea.
Jon then moved to Sealand Romania in 1998 as a Customer Service Executive. In 1999 he became the National Sales Director with Kuhne & Nagel Romania and in 2001, Ocean Manager with SDV Romania.
In September 2003, Jon moved to Vancouver, Canada and after working for Kuhne Nagel and then Panalpina Vancouver as an Ocean Export Manager he joined Karlo Corporation as a Ship Chandler. In January 2007, Jon became Operations Supervisor with Norton Lilly International.
He joined Inchcape Shipping in December 2011 as port manager. Jon’s rich industry experience and his strong local and federal connections – Stevedores and ILWU Included – allowed him to ensure optimal port calls for ships carrying containers, grain, coal, sulphur, pulp and paper, oil, cars, concentrates, logs and project cargo all over the BC West Coast. Also managing the branch’s P/L status every month was one of the many of his duties.
In 2014 between June and November, together with the VP of Inchape’s offshore division, Jon jointly prepared the bid for PRGT - a complex offshore project - which made him knowledgeable about all the relevant Canadian regulation in force.
In December 2014 Jon became the Managing Director of GFY Marine Group Inc. – company whom he founded – and next to the port operation services and shipping agency, he developed the activity of shipbrokering, putting in practice his theoretical knowledge acquired in over 7 years while studying for the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. Under Jon’s guidance, as a shipbroker GFY Marine Group became increasingly active in dry bulk and especially tanker trades – oil and gas. Between December 2018 and June 2020 GFY Marine Group Inc. ran a Charter Party as the charterer’s shipbroker (C/P that Jon personally negotiated, signed and supervised throughout its execution): Charterer – One Marine – China & Singapore and Shipowner LandSea Nigeria, for the chartering of a workboat to provide crew, equipment and provision services to one of COOEC’s pipe layer HYSY202 that worked on the Dangote project.
Between June 2017 and June 2020 Jon worked as Senior Operations Manager Canada for Wilhelmsen Ship Service. In that position he continued delivering the job requirements of shipping agency, husbandry, protective and full/port agent. That included the whole specter of networking, selling, concluding the deal (the call), preparing and setting-up the port calls (arranging for berth or/and anchorage, pilots, tugs, labour, advising/averting the port and local authorities, supervising big part of the load/discharge, issuing and completing the proper documentation on time, following-up the invoices and closing the final disbursement etc. Jon’s combined background allows him to navigate through easily and successfully, from the sequence and logistics of a simple port call up to complex projects involving the maritime component.
After June 2020, Jon returned at GFY Marine Group Inc. as President and CEO and is focusing on Business Development in the Maritime field and Operations, utilizing his extensive experience and rich local and worldwide network of maritime lawyers and adjustors, port operators, shipowners, shipbrokers and others, in order to create new business for the company.
